Sunday Morning: August 4th, 2013

If we do even a cursory reading the God’s word we must admit that there is often a great divide between our lives and what He wants us to be. Sometimes that divide makes us hopeless or discourages us but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Understanding The Heart

What is the nature of the heart (spirit or will)? When we step outside our cultural views we see that the ‘heart’, ‘spirit’, and ‘will’ are all words that refer to the same thing.

Evil in the Soul

We must see ourselves in a ruined condition before we can understand that we must be delivered and reformed into something that God can use. Spiritual formation is like an education, it’s ongoing. Everyone gets one either good or bad.

Restoring Goodness to the Soul

One of the most amazing things about human beings is that we are capable of restoration. When we understand our heart and the importance of it, it’s possible to reorder ourselves. Let’s step up, abandon ourselves and devote all we are to God’s service. I love these words by Calvin:

“By service, I mean not only that which consists in verbal obedience, but that by which the mind, divested of its own carnal feelings, implicitly obeys the call of the Spirit of God. This transformation (which Paul calls the renewing of the mind, Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23), though it is the first entrance of life, was unknown to all the philosophers. They give the government of man to reason alone .... But Christian philosophy bids her give place, and yield complete submission to the Holy Spirit, so that the man himself no longer lives, but Christ lives and reigns in him (Galatians 2:20)”

Spiritual Change

Before we can move into instructions on moving from a life of self-adulation to one of surrender we must clear up some misunderstandings. Although it sounds simple we need to understand that change is possible.

Transforming the Mind

Thoughts are the first place we must change. We must allow the light of God’s word to move upon our hearts and begin to direct our thoughts more toward Him

Transforming the Mind Part 2
Feelings are both a blessing and a problem in our lives. They are also central in our spiritual formation. Many times old feelings must be removed or modified and new ones installed. Feelings live on the front row of our lives and call for our attention every day.

Transforming the Will
We now should have a thought life centered on Christ and our feelings should be dominated by feelings that accompany love, joy and peace. Those changes are not sustained unless there are changes in other areas too. Our heart, spirit, and character (together known as the will) must change to be more in line with the character of Christ.

Transforming the Body

For our heart to be truly transformed our body must be ready to do what is good and to refrain from evil. The body must become a servant to our will and the inclinations to do wrong must be eliminated.  For good or evil the body lies right at the center of our spiritual life.

Transforming Our Social Dimension

Our relationships with others are important if we are to be like Christ. Our relationships with others should be built with the foundation of our relationship with the Godhead.

Transforming the Soul

We must get to the point where we realize that our soul is running our life at every point. External circumstances, thoughts, intentions, feelings, are all there but it is our soul that is at the center regulating all of those dimensions of our lives.

Children of Light

God intends Christians to be different. We are to to walk as "children of the light" Eph 5. In order to walk was children of the light there must be a change at the center of our lives. We must be renovating our heart so out will is inline with God's.

Spiritual Formation in Our Local Congregation

If the lives of Christians are different from the world, you would expect a gathering of Christians to be different too. 1 Timothy 3:15 reminds us, "In case I am delayed, I write that you may )mow how people ought to conduct themselves in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the support structure and foundation of the truth.
